PS5 Console

If you've been looking to extend your PlayStation 5 storage capacity by finally gaining access to the internal SSD slot, we hope you signed up for the recently announced console update beta program. Sony has uploaded a new support page detailing how to add an M.2 SSD to the console, and the ability will be made available to beta testers first. "This feature is only available to beta users at this time. The internal M.2 SSD expansion feature will be enabled via an upcoming PS5 system software update," the site reads.

To meet the requirements of the PS5 hardware, the M.2 SSD must use the "PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD" interface and have a capacity of at least 250GB. The largest internal SSD you'll be able to install is a 4TB one. It also must meet a certain form factor and have a sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s or faster. More information is provided through the link. The site in question also details how an M.2 SSD can be installed, requiring a cross-head screwdriver and a "well-lit room with a table to work on".

Once the 12 steps on the site have been followed, you'll be able to boot up the PS5 once more and begin to move data and software over to the SSD. And just to be clear, "PS5 games are playable on M.2 SSD storage". You can download PS5 titles directly to the storage device and update them too.

Shared alongside this welcome update are the first details on a PS5 compatible M.2 SSD from Seagate. A 500GB model will set you back $149, a 1TB upgrade costs $254, the 2TB option is $514, and the big 4TB device will be $999. You can learn much more through the link.
